"Scars Like Wings" Book Review

Happy holidays everyone! A few days ago, it was my one year anniversary of book reviewing!! It has been a while since I have posted a book review, but school is done for the year so that means more reading time and more reviews! I hope you all are enjoying the holidays and had a Merry Christmas In this blog post, the book I will be reviewing is Scars Like Wings by Erin Stewart.

General Information
Scars Like Wings is roughly 373 pages. (Depending on the edition/type of book you have).
Scars Like Wings is a fiction novel, suited for teens and adults.
Genres/Themes: Friendship, Family, Real Life Drama, High School, also a little bit of body positivity.
Age Recommendation: Young Adult. (13-14+)

Synopsis
Sixteen-year-old Ava Lee used to have a "normal" life. She had a family, a group of friends and a boyfriend. But that was all before the fire. Ava plus her parents and cousin (a.k.a Ava's best friend) were all involved in a house fire. She loses pretty much everything that was in her life before the fire. A fresh start at a new school is a challenge for Ava, but there is someone who can help her along the way. And Ava can help her too. Piper is a girl in a wheelchair that Ava meets in a burn therapy group. Piper attends the same school as Ava plus she is the same age. Piper was involved in an incident with some girls at the school which caused her story. Every person has their struggles. Every person has their scars. She also meets Piper's friend Asad, (who turns into a crush). Asad and Piper help Ava face each day at school, however all eyes are on Ava, the Burned Girl. Throughout the school year, Ava takes some risks, faces challenges and gets a little out of her comfort zone: beating bullies and doing the things she loved before the fire. She realises that although she has scars, she can be beautiful.

Everyone has scars, some are just easier to see.

My Review
Scars Like Wings is a beautiful book about learning to love yourself. It really shows the true power of friendship. The book was also relatable and heartwarming. Ava's story seemed so real and a lot of thought and effort had been put into creating the novel. One aspect that I found was that Piper and Ava's relationship seemed toxic at times. Piper did not have much thought and consideration towards Ava's personal belongings and Ava's cousin, Sarah's personal belongings as well.Their friendship was also very hit and miss. One moment, they were friends, the next they had an argument, but they become friends again, and so on. It was really inspiring to read that Ava still had a go at one of her hobbies that she loved before she got burned. It shows that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. A more personal critique that I found was that some of the twists that involved the characters did not seem to 100% fit with the story/flow with the story. Even though Ava "looked different" from others, it was nice to read about

Ava and Piper supporting each other through the challenges in life and school as well as Asad being there too. Emotion did get to me at times! My eyes were watering a bit!
