Synopsis

Set in Australia, Maisie Martin is a sixteen-year-old girl who is spending the Summer hanging out with friends and family. Sounds great right? Wrong! Maisie's dad is away for the holidays and Christmas, embarrassment is everywhere for Maisie, her crush is spending the Summer with Maisie and her best friend is acting strange. There is also a beauty pageant that is being held, Maisie Martin never thought she would enter it, but sometimes, you have to let go of your fears and believe in yourself.

My Review

"What I Like About Me" is such a sweet book! It has a strong message about body positivity, learning from your mistakes and that you need to love yourself just the way you are,

"I really, really love myself. I mean, I still have bad days - who doesn't? But I have more good days." p. 221

The book was structured as a Discovery Journal that the protagonist Maisie Martin has to fill out for school, I really love that idea! At the start of each chapter or 'journal entry' the reader will instantly want to read more and know what happens next as it says the main points of the chapter briefly as something that Maisie "discovered." The reader then has to read the chapter to find out exactly what happens, this idea is smart and works super well!

The coming-of-age aspect was amazing. Maisie begins shy, stubborn & scared, she does not like her body,
"Imagine having a body that you're always uncomfortable in...Imagine having a body that people stare at wherever you go." p.156-157

By the end of the book, Maisie is tough, brave and fearless, she is more confident in her herself,
"...I still feel like I kind of won everything." p.236

There was foreshadowing throughout the whole book which is super fantastic as books with foreshadowing are pretty much the best books.
